MEET SANA

BEING AISHA

Sana Asad plays the protagonist in Get up, Aisha!

Name: Sana Asad. I play Aisha in Get up, Aisha!

The actor in me took flight when: I think I just got into theatre school, decided to go, finished my program, got an agent for film and TV and have been doing it ever since. It was just a natural progression – I never gave it much thought.

The artiste in me wishes: There were more opportunities for people of colour in the film and television world. We want your stories, we need your stories, your stories are just as important and interesting and need to be told!!

Favourite colour: Blue. It will only ever be blue.

Favourite designer: I don’t know, maybe Mother Nature?

Favourite movie: Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightly has me in a chokehold. I cry every time. And there have been a lot of times.

Favourite musicians: Lately, nobody singing in English. I really have been enjoying music by Aya Nakumura, Elyanna, Sevdaliza.

Favourite TV shows: I can’t wait for The Handmaid’s Tale to come back. Obviously, The Last of Us. At the moment, I’ve really been into Blue Eyed Samurai – I love that cinematic style of anime.

Favourite ice cream flavour: Chocolate. No nuts or wafer or any of that nonsense!! Just straight up cocoa!

Favourite cuisine: SUSHI!!! Specifically aburi. Like if that were my prison food I would serve that time.

Favourite restaurant: I really love all-you-can-eat sushi. KaKa is probably my favourite spot for good quality sushi and a nice variety. They have the best little creme brûlées.

Favourite sports: I’m really into rock climbing, I’ve been doing it for years and go almost every weekend. I love how fun it is. I’ve also recently taken up pole dancing these last few months. I love the pole community of girls I’ve met – they’re so much fun. It’s a nice way to have fun and work out.

Favourite sportsperson: I don’t like sports, really, but my Instagram feed has a lot of Sha’Carri Richardson. I think she’s so cool. She’s so powerful and I love that she shows up to her races wearing whatever she wants. Sha’Carri is pretty inspirational for sure.

Favourite author: I recently read A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers. Her writing style was hilarious, I loved how dark it was. Also in a similar vein, I read Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica which was WILD and I think about it often post reading. It was so dark...clearly that seems to be a theme I enjoy when it comes to reading.

I hang out: At my cat’s house a lot. Sometimes, she hangs out with me!

I’m freaked out by: SCUTIGERAS. They’re the centipedes from hell. Don’t google search them if you don’t want to see them in your nightmares.

I need: To win an escape game.

My role models: My mom, AOC, Rihanna.

Tips to save the planet: I think we really need to think of more sustainable ways to get rid of waste that don’t involve burying it, burning it or ignoring it. Maybe shooting it out into outer space? A trajectory towards the nearest blackhole? That could work, right?

In a perfect world: Hard to imagine right now given the state of the world. But in a perfect world there would be no hate.
