HONORARY DOCTORATE FOR DR CHANDRAKANT SHAH

The degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, will be conferred upon Grant’s Desi Achiever Dr Chandrakant Shah by Dr Rose M. Patten, Chancellor, and Professor Meric S. Gertler, President, University of Toronto on Thursday, June 17.

Dr Shah is being recognized by the University of Toronto for his outstanding service for the public good, as a pioneering leader in public health education in Canada, a tireless advocate for Indigenous peoples and a champion of equity and inclusion. He is a practising physician, board member of Anishnawbe Health Foundation and a professor emeritus at U of T’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Dr Chandrakant Shah is the recipient of several awards including the Order of Ontario and the Outstanding Physicians of Ontario award (2007) by the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario for excellence and coming closest to meeting society’s vision of an “ideal physician”.

His textbook, Public Health and Preventive Medicine in Canada, is widely used by Canadian undergraduate and graduate students from a range of health disciplines.
