WOMEN’S HEALTH: Ayurveda remedies
By SHANTHI BALASUBRAMANIAM, Ayurvedic Practitioner
Women’s health encompasses many different issues during the different stages of their lives.
Every woman goes through a series of profound changes during her lifetime, which is why, no matter what her age, a woman needs to pay attention to her lifestyle, nutrition, exercise and emotional well-being.
Hormones in Ayurveda are related to Pitta (fire) dosha. The imbalance of this leads irregular menstrual cycle, cramps, heavy bleeding, infertility, anemia, acne, hair loss and much more.
Sour, salt and pungent, oily foods increase Pitta; while astringent, bitter and sweet foods reduce the same.
Green fig, amla (goose berry), Indian asparagus (shatavari) and methi leaves are a few of the effective fruits and vegetables that can help balance Pitta conditions.
Some simple remedies for Pitta conditions:
Irregular and painful cycle. Two small onions crushed, add salt, eat early morning on an empty stomach followed by cold water for 30 days.
Menstrual cramps. Black pepper (11), garlic pearls (7). Grind them together add half a cup of cow’s milk and drink during the first three days of the period.
Sesame oil. 1 tbsp every morning on an empty stomach to balance hormones.
Add black sesame candy, 1 cup of pomegranate juice to your daily menu.
Female infertility. Take a pinch of cinnamon powder in half teaspoon of honey and massage the gums 2-3 times a day.
Hair loss. Boil 10-15 curry leaves in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes on a low flame, squeeze a lime and drink every day.
Ayurveda has provided a supportive approach for women in every stage of life for restoring and maintaining health.
