MEET SHWETA
THE SOUND OF HER MUSIC
Versatile Indo-Canadian singer Shweta Subram’s journey started when she won the Sangam Kala Group North American talent hunt a decade ago in Canada.
Sangam Kala Group has also discovered Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghosal in the earlier days. She went to Mumbai to learn more about the industry and though most of her experiences were positive, she was also dismayed at how the industry functioned – she quickly realized that talent is not the primary determinant of success. Relationships and luck are major factors, and being a girl who was not from the industry and did not have a godfather often meant being taken for a ride.
Shweta returned to Canada and decided to pursue music as an independent artiste. Her first single, Jee le live life, caught the attention of music directors Salim-Sulaiman who invited her to perform with them at the IIFA Awards in Toronto. Following this, Shweta released additional originals Ajooba, Piya, and Rasiya. In addition to this, Shankar Tucker (Mere saajan sun sun), Aakash Gandhi (Jeena jeena), Raashi Kulkarni (Soch na sake) and The Piano Guys reached out to Shweta to collaborate. She was pleasantly surprised when, during a short visit to India, Ayushmann Khurrana’s team contacted Shweta to sing for a movie alongside him. They were impressed by her cover of Mitti di khushboo and in Hawaizaada, she sang the title track Dil-e-nadaan. Shweta debuted with Tamil music director Ghibran for Mella mella in the movie Maayavan.
Along with singing in studios for albums and movies, Shweta has also headlined shows across 12 countries. She recognized as the South Asian of the Year by Zee TV Canada in 2015, was the youngest vocalist to perform at the esteemed Carnegie Hall in New York, toured with Sonu Nigam in US and Suriname, and became the first female headliner for a Bollywood concert in Saudi Arabia where she performed alongside Shaan.
Now residing in Dubai, Shweta continues to work on her music. She is the female voice of Tesher’s most popular single Jalebi baby, has released a lyrical video of her original Rasiya and a cover of Jab koi baat bigad jaye with Abhay Jodhpurkar.
What’s next for Shweta? She will continue her pursuit of Bollywood with the dream of becoming a household name in music. In parallel, she will continue creating new original music and collaborating with other talented artistes.
What would Shweta do if she was not a singer? She cannot even think of an answer because, for her, music is life.
