Toronto Calcutta Foundation (TCF) recently organized a distribution of jackfruit and other fruit saplings in and near Kolkata, India.
The new project, funded through donations from Sankar and Suzanne Dasgupta, aims to help the environment while helping create local employment opportunities during the distribution. It is being conducted in partnership with NGOs in West Bengal.
Jackfruit, in particular, is believed to be loaded with vitamins and minerals that are vital to children’s nourishment and growth. And it is hoped that excess produce will provide a source of extra income for local families and farmers.
Over 120,000 saplings have been distributed in various districts in West Bengal, with the target being 200,000-plus.
